2026 Foundations of Filmmaking for Photographers - Family Films Showcase

One of the most meaningful parts of this course is seeing what happens when students begin filming the moments that matter to them.

Not the big, perfectly planned moments. The small ones. The everyday ones. The ones that quietly pass by unless someone decides to press record.

Inside this course, students learn the technical side of filmmaking. How to film with intention. How to edit footage into something meaningful. How to listen for the sounds that make a moment feel alive.

But what matters most is what happens when those skills are used to document real life.

What the Students Said:

Heather shared that one of her biggest takeaways was learning to wait for the entire moment and really listen to the audio, something many photographers don’t think about at first.

Kristine joined the course to return to the basics and was surprised by how powerful that reset was. The weekly calls helped her stay accountable, and by the end she had created a keepsake film of her own children that she now gets to keep.

For D, this was her very first film class. She admitted her final project still has room to grow, but she was excited to discover that she could figure out how to film and edit a story from her everyday life.

Other students found themselves experimenting creatively.

Milada used the project as a way to explore new techniques while filming her daughter on the last day of summer. What began as a technical exercise in focus, ND filters, and color grading slowly became something deeper: a nostalgic goodbye to her daughter’s preschool years and to a countryside home their family was about to leave behind.

M returned to the course for a second time and leaned into what she loves most: storytelling. She described her film as a gift to her daughter-in-law, a way to show her how beautiful she is as a mother and to capture moments her granddaughter will one day treasure.

And then there are films like the one Tessa created.

Her family woke before sunrise on the morning after the winter solstice and walked to the river together, carrying a lantern to light their path. She described the project as an exercise in courage. Letting go of perfection. Filming what it felt like to be together in that moment.

Her reflection captured something that sits at the heart of this course:

Moments like these don’t have to be perfect. They just have to be remembered.

That idea is the foundation of family filmmaking.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is preservation.

When families watch these films years from now, they won’t be thinking about focus or color grading. They’ll hear the voices. See the movement. Feel what life was like during that season. That’s the power of family films.

Moving images allow us to return to a moment in a way photographs alone cannot. They hold the voices, the laughter, the way someone moved through the world at that time.

The films in this showcase are not meant to be flawless.

They are meant to be real.

They are the beginning of each filmmaker’s journey and a reminder that the stories worth preserving are often already unfolding in front of us.

Take a moment to watch them. And as you do, notice what you feel.

Because that feeling is exactly why family films matter.

The course encouraged me to take my camera along with me on small family adventures to capture the essence of our family at that moment. This film tells the story of how we decided to welcoming the light on the first morning after winter solstice - the longest night of the year. We got up early before sunrise and set out to the river in darkness. We symbolically brought a lantern to lighten our path, before the light of the new day took over, initiating a new season of days prolonging from now on. I challenged myself to film what it feels like, to focus on being together in the moment, and prioritising this over creating a perfect video. It helped me to step out in both creativity and courage to include myself in the footage, while simultaneously being present with my family. It made me realise that moments like these don't have to be perfect, they just have to be remembered. I already love this keepsake film and I have no doubt it will only gain value over time.

I took this course to go back to the basics and I am so glad I did. I think it's always good to get a refresher on what to think about and consider while filming and editing. The weekly calls kept me on top of the material AND I have a cute keepsake film of my own kids now that I have put together.

Learning to wait for the entire moment & also listen to the audio were some of my biggest takeaways from this course.

Milada Koutnikova

Thanks to this course, I tried to be more intentional both while filming and editing. I ended up using footage of my daughter on the last day of summer, where I experimented with focus — learning to make AF look less artificial, but especially embracing the softness and imperfection of M focus — and challenged myself shooting outdoors with an ND filter.

I tried to incorporate various techniques from the course, like creating a title, adding double exposures, trimming and editing music to the beat, and color grading predominantly backlit footage (quite a challenge for me).

Beyond the technical aspects, this project became very personal and nostalgic: not only a farewell to summer, and my daughter's preschool years, but also a quiet goodbye to our countryside home before moving to the capital — a season of our lives that I will always cherish.
