SHOWCASE: “Moving Portrait” | FilmingLife® ArtHouse
"It's one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it's another thing to make a portrait of who they are."
- Paul Caponigro
The September/October ArtHouse Film Project theme was led by Kylie Purtell and was centered around the theme MOVING PORTRAIT.
Kylie challenged our members to create short films that really got to the heart or essence of a person, place or thing.
The theme was broken down into two levels:
Level One: Create a Moving Portrait film that is 2 minutes or less in length, that focuses on one main subject (human/pet/object/place/relationship)
Level Two: Create a FACELESS Moving Portrait film that is 2 minutes or less in length and either doesn't reveal the subject's face or reveals it at the end; OR, create a SELF-PORTRAIT Moving Portrait film, 2 minutes or less in length.
We are so impressed with the creativity our members have infused into their films, and the way they’ve pushed themselves to try new things.
We’re so excited to present this showcase for you today…
The Educator’s Choice Awards have been chosen by the Lead Educator of the film project MOVING PORTRAIT Kylie Purtell, as those that fully embody the spirit of the FilmingLife® ArtHouse, and are noted for their storytelling, creativity and unique interpretation of the theme.
Sarah MacClary | Corvallis Video
What Kylie said about Sarah’s film -
”From the minute this film started playing I knew it was special. Absolutely the definition of made with love, I learn not only how much Sarah loves her daughter, but I can see the place that is special to them and feel like I’m there in the forest with them. Gorgeous use of light also adds lots of depth to this moving portrait. The whole time I was watching this I could feel the calm stillness of the forest leak out of the screen towards me, and it really is just a pleasure to watch.”

Paige Gotts

What Kylie said about Paige’s film -
”Paige’s beautiful self-portrait Moving Portrait film made me feel all nostalgic for the days when my firstborn was that tiny and it honestly had me choking up and wishing so bad I had a film like this of us together. Paige has conveyed so much in short film, but what I love most is the way we feel like we’re standing right there in the room with them. The addition of audio and her sweet baby’s laugh in the second half, combined with stunning light & visuals really made my nostalgia-lovin’ heart happy”

Meg Hemmick
What Kylie said about Meg’s film -
”From the first time I saw this film by Meg I was absolutely in love with it! The story is enhanced even more when you know that the Color King is actually colourblind, but it doesn’t dampen his love of colour and having fun with it. I was particularly inspired by Meg’s use of both black & white & colour, and the clever way she introduces the colour portion of the film. I knew it took a lot of time and painstaking research and hard work to make it happen and it was certainly worth it, because Meg totally pulled it off!”
