BLACK & WHITE Showcase | FilmingLife® ArtHouse Film Project
The Term 1 2025 theme for our ArtHouse Film Project was led by FilmingLife® Community Manager Kylie Purtell and gave our members the opportunity to experiment with using black & white footage in their films.
Our ArtHouse themes are chosen to give members the opportunity to try a new skill or technique, the space to refine or try out an idea they’ve been playing with, or provide inspiration and encouragement to create personal films outside of client work.
The goal of the ArtHouse is that members will add tools to their tool belt that will have them feeling more confident and accomplished in their filmmaking.
The purpose for the Black & White theme was to have our members think deeply about their storytelling, and how using a black & white conversion for their film in part or in whole could change the way their story felt. We wanted them to use the black & white intentionally, and to think about how converting footage to black & white affects not only the look & feel, but how it can elevate the role of shapes, texture, shadow & light within the story and add extra depth & layers.
As always the films that were submitted & created by our members were just amazing, and we’re so pleased to present them to you today…
The Educator’s Choice Award is chosen by the Lead Educator of the film project as those that fully embody the spirit of the FilmingLife® ArtHouse, and are noted for their storytelling, creativity and unique interpretation of the theme.
Julia Xanthos Liddy
What Kylie said about Julia’s film -
”Julia absolutely nailed this film. Through the use of voiceover, perfect song choice, and the choice of when to use black & white & when to retain colour, Julia has created a film with so. much. feeling! An exploration of grief and the way we process it, a celebration of the importance of place and how are houses are not just boxes where we live, but containers for all of the love & light, sadness & shadows that fill our lives. I’d love this film, Julia, thank you for sharing it with us.”
